O Christmas Tree is a German carol with the title of O Tannenbaum. Since the original text is in German, there is no standard translation of the lyrics into English. The song became very popular in England and the United States in the nineteenth century with the tradition of bringing a Christmas tree into homes during the holiday season. The composer of the melody is unknown, but the song’s popularity has spread beyond the celebration of Christmas: in the 1800s it became the official song for the state of Maryland.
